First British edition of O'Brian's first novel in the acclaimed Aubrey-Maturin series about the British Navy. Although first published in America, and initially rejected by O'Brian's usual London publisher, the series proved to be much more popular in Britain until the success of the 1990 Norton reissue (and the 2003 film adaptation).
