Life and Genuine Character of Doctor Swift
Item #84599
(SWIFT, Jonathan). The Life and Genuine Character of Doctor Swift. Written by Himself. Modern quarter calf and marbled boards, calf label on front board. London: Printed for J. Roberts, 1733. First edition. Complete with half title. Foxon S884. Rothschild II. 2143. Teerink 727. A verse composition anticipating reactions to Swift's death and legacy (Swift lived until 1745), one of a series of self-portrait poems evaluating his career to date, thought to be written by Swift himself, although Swift often refuted the notion. There has been some suggestion as to whether it was not perhaps Alexander Pope (or another poet) who wrote this work, though contemporary sources attest to Swift's involvement in its publication. Fine.
