Item #84431
(ENGRAVING). [PLEN, B.]. Autumn [caption title]. Etched line engraving. 11? x 9? in. Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by B. Plen, [c.1800]. Trimmed inside the plate mark just touching text at lower left, small stain at lower left. Very good. Fowble 351. A charming American genre print, published in Philadelphia about 1800 by B. Plen. The scene shows a courting couple in the foreground, exchanging fruits, including a pineapple, a symbol of hospitality. There are hunters and dogs in the distance, with an epigrammatic poem along the bottom border beginning "Hence from the busy joy surrounding fields / In cheerful error let us tread the maze / of Autumn unconfined and taste reviv'd...." Based on an English series of 1794, this is one of four in a series of representations of the seasons. A handsome early American engraved view, showing the dependence on English originals in the period.
