(BANNEKER, Benjamin). (MAGAZINE). The Universal Asylum and Columbian Magazine for 1791. Vol. II. July-December 1791. Philadelphia: Printed for the Proprietors for William Young, 1791. Engraved title page. Contemporary leather, raised spine bands. Near-contemporary bookplate on front cover. Somewhat rubbed and worn, losses to front flyleaf, foxing and staining, else very good. The most notable article in this set of monthly magazines is a short biography of the polymath Benjamin Banneker by James M'Henry, at pp. 300-301, in the November issue. M'Henry writes, " I consider this Negro as fresh proof that the powers of the mind are disconnected with the colour of the skin. In every civilized country we shall find thousands of whites, liberally educated, and who have enjoyed greater opportunities of instruction than this Negro, his inferiors." Each issue also contains short sections of Ramsay's History of the American Revolution.
