Old water staining, spine flaking, toning and foxing throughout, front board nearly detached, lower outer corner of rear board bent, else good. Shaw & Shoemaker 10684. First American edition of the Koran, based on the first European vernacular translation, i.e., the French translation of Andre du Ryer (c. 1580-1660/1672), a scholar of Arabic and Turkish and for many years the French envoy to the Ottoman court. His edition of the Koran was published in 1647, and Alexander Ross (c. 1590-1654) is usually credited with the English translation used here, first published in 1649. This copy was owned by three members of the Boyd family, with their signatures on the title page: William Boyd, C. H. Boyd, and A. J. H. Boyd.
