HAVILAND, John and BRIDPORT, Hugh. The Builder's Assistant, Containing the Five Orders of Architecture... Philadelphia: John Bioren, 1818-1821. 1st ed. 3 vols. 148 plates (lacking 2), some folding. Some toning, repair to title page of vol. 3, else very good. Hitchcock 578. Charles Wood, American Architectural Books 156 (2nd edition of vol. 3). First edition of "the cornerstone of Greek revival in America" (Wood). This work is the first American publication to depict the Greek Orders of architecture. John Haviland (1792-1852) was an English-born architect who was a major figure in American Neo-Classical architecture, and one of the most notable architects working from Philadelphia in the nineteenth century. Complete sets of all three volumes, published separately in 1818, 1819, and 1821, seem to be especially scarce. Contemporary owner's signature on flyleaves of vols. 1 and 2.
