Some closed tears throughout, binding rubbed and shaken, toning and soiling mainly affecting the plates. Contemporary ownership signatures to both front and rear pastedowns. Lower free end corner of p.115 torn-away affecting two letters. Half of the last unnumbered leaf torn away, not affecting text. Housed in a custom 1/4 morocco backed cloth clamshell box. Overall a good copy. Howes M-218. One of the most colorful of the early Washington biographies, and the one in which the hatchet story first appeared. Earlier editions are practically unobtainable and only contain a portrait and no other plates.
