Ladies' Dress Shoes of the Nineteenth Century
Item #83938
GREIG, T. Watson. Ladies' Dress Shoes of the Nineteenth Century. With Sixty-three Illustrations. Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1900. Folio. 3pp., plus 22 chromolithograph plates and captions. Orig. printed boards, faded and stained, rebacked in matching linen. Library bookplate and old stamps on verso of title page and bottom of two following leaves. Very good. A clean, vivid copy of a marvelous and eccentric book, compiled by a real connoisseur of ladies' shoes. Grieg (1837-1912), a member of various historical societies in Perthshire, Scotland, was apparently a collector of historical shoes and authored a number of books to display his collection in full color. The shoes, three to a plate, are nearly life-size, and the accompanying text describes Grieg's sources for his collecion - a number of ladies of the peerage feature alongside popular British actresses. "Seeing his outstanding collection of shoes age and crumble, Grieg commissioned a book to document the lot, to which he added meticulous notes about the former occupants" - Smithsonian, Design for Daily Life exhibition. OCLC locates 16 copies in libraries, but it is uncommon on the market, appearing only twice at auction this century.
