Though set in the Carolinas, Baker (1825-1883) wrote the present work during the Civil War while he was serving as a Presbyterian minister in Austin, Texas (despite his unionist views). After the war, he left Texas and took posts at a variety of congregations in the North, where he continued writing fiction and theological works. Bookplate of James Strohn Copley on front pastedown. Occasional light foxing, some discoloration of cloth, else a very good copy.
