Gibbes (1809-1866) was a long-time resident of Charleston and an authority on the natural sciences, particularly paleontology. In 1849 he published a work in which he postulated that the earth was actually millions of years older than originally believed, which he nevertheless worked hard to reconcile with biblical creation stories.
