Stevens (1819-1886), the Vermont-born Americana bibliographer at the British Museum, conceived of this edition of Hariot's work as part of his "Hercules Club," a literary association that would print key early explorers' accounts of America, but did not see it through to final publication before his death. In 1900, his son of the same name finally put out this work, which is usually accompanied by another volume with Stevens' biography of Hariot. Most copies appear to have been issued with an explanatory preface dated 1900 by Stevens, Jr., which isn't present here.
