Halsted (1786-1857), a New York bookseller and printer with apparently no formal medical training, worked hard to find a treatment for "dyspepsia," which for him meant a variety of stomach and intestinal neuromuscular conditions which would now be categorized as functional gastric disorders. His treatments methods included a series of stretches and other exercises intended to relax the abdominal muscles, and he later patented patient devices for the same.
