HALSTED, O[liver]. A Full and Accurate Account of the New Method of Curing Dyspepsia, Discovered and Practised by... With Some Observations on Diseases of the Digestive Organs. New York: O. Halsted, 1830. 1st ed. 155pp. Modern quarter calf and marbled boards. Toning and mild foxing throughout, repair to p. 63/4, else very good. American Imprints 1737. Halsted (1786-1857), a New York bookseller and printer with apparently no formal medical training, worked hard to find a treatment for "dyspepsia," which for him meant a variety of stomach and intestinal neuromuscular conditions which would now be categorized as functional gastric disorders. His treatments methods included a series of stretches and other exercises intended to relax the abdominal muscles, and he later patented patient devices for the same.
