He was the first to serve on a mission in Mexico, for which Brigham Young commissioned him to translate parts of the Book of Mormon into Spanish. His autobiography describes these events in detail, as well as his leadership of the rescue of the stranded Mormon pioneers at Devils' Gate in the winter of 1856-57 and his contact with Native Americans in the US Southwest and Mexico.
