HOUGHTON, M[itchell] B[ennett]. From the Beginning Until Now. [Montgomery, AL: The Paragon Press, 1914]. 1st ed. 276pp. Portrait frontis., portraits, plates. Orig. cloth. Near fine. Dornbusch II, 47. Presentation inscription from the author on front free endpaper, "Thomas Dennis, Mobile Ala. With compliments of the author M. B. Houghton Montgomery Ala. July 1st 1916." Mitchell B. Houghton, along with his brother, William R. Houghton, served in the Georgia Columbus Guards, 15th Alabama Infantry. They were previously the authors of Two Boys in the Civil War and After (1912). The title of the present work is meant to be taken literally. Before discussing his views on the Civil War and Reconstruction, Houghton provides a chapter describing the biblical account of creation. The objective is to place the Southern struggle for independence in the context of the history of Christian religion and the progress of civilization, The Union is demonized as "The Federal Apollyon," and the South portrayed as being on the side of God and the right. He briefly discusses his and his brother's service to the Confederate army, but this work is intended primarily as a general defense of the Confederate cause and an attack on the evil deeds of the North, before, during, and after the war. There is an extensive, laudatory account of the Ku Klux Klan ("An Invisible Triumphant Army"), and remembrances of life in the South until the year 1913.

Price: $500.00
