Item #82863

[COBBETT, William]. Peter Porcupine. Porcupine's Political Censor, for March, 1797. Philadelphia: William Cobbett, 1797. 8vo. [4], 53-115, [1], [7 (index)], [1] pp. Disbound. Rippling and toning throughout. Spotting to the final page. Early bookseller notations in pencil. Generally, very good. Evans 31947. In 1796, a few years after he arrived in the United States, Cobbett began this monthly periodical, which he used to snipe at his political opponents-usually those of a pro-French or Jeffersonian-Republican sentiment. This is the last issue of the Censor. It was replaced with Porcupine's Gazette, a daily newspaper. This issue contains a letter with uncomplimentary observations on the French Reovlution and French society; Noah Webster's attack on Porcupine for the latter's advocacy of an alliance with England; Porcupine's attack on Webster, Francophiles, and Tome Pain, whose Right of Man is called "the manuel (sic) of Jacobinism;" and Porcupine's Last Will and Testament.
