Item #82620

(LONDON CHRONICLE). The London Chronicle. From Thursday, December 12, to Saturday, December 14, 1776. Vol. XL. No. 3124. London: J. Wilkie, 1776. 4to. 569-576pp. Removed from volume. Printing error with loss of text in inner lower corner of p. 571 and outer lower corner of p. 574. Early stamp in the bottom margin of p. 572. Very good. An early edition of a long-running (1756-1823) tri-weekly London paper. This issue contains a letter to the editor, signed "M. N.," taking issue with Dr. Price's "later publication." Presumably he is referencing Richard Price's Observations on the Nature of Civil Liberty... and the Justice and Policy of the War with America (1776). "M.N." offers a searing, full-column appraisal of Price's pro-American work. Other items of interest to students of American history include a handful of notices of American ships capturing British merchant ships, and an extract of a letter from Paris, dated December 1, saying "A report prevails, that the English Ambassador has complained to the King, that a French gentleman of distinction is privately raising recruits for the American rebels."

Price: $400.00
