Item #82618
(LONDON CHRONICLE). The London Chronicle. From Thursday, May 10, to Saturday, May 12, 1770. Vol. XXVII. No. 2092. London: J. Wilkie, 1770. 4to. 449-456 pp. Removed from volume. Top edge trimmed aggressively touching the title and removing the running header on page 450-no content is lost. Early stamp in the bottom margin of p. 452. Very good. An early edition of a long-running (1756-1823) tri-weekly London paper. This issue contains an interesting report from London: "Yesterday there was a Cabinet Council at St. James's. On a motion being made in a great Assembly for an Address to his Majesty to have the state of the military establishment in America reconsidered and rectified.." The short column goes on to generalize the unrest in the Colonies and reports that "it is rumoured that Governor Pownall, formerly Governor of Massachusetts Bay, will, at the desire of the Ministry, re-assume his government, until the distractions at Boston, and the Colony in general, are subsided." This issue also includes an advertisement for "A Narrative of the HORRID MASSACRE in Boston..." with an accompanying engraving of "the Scene of Action" for an affordable two and a half shillings.
