(ALABAMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY).BOWIE, Alexander. FOSTER, Joshua H. Transactions of the Alabama Historical Society at its First Annual Meeting, Held at the University of Alabama, July 14, 1851. Tuskaloosa, AL; J. W. & J. F. Warren, 1852. 1st ed. 8vo. 54, [2] pp. In modern cloth with morocco title label. Contents foxed else near fine. Sabin 569. Ellison 825. Owen p. 1243-4. The society was organized in 1850. It's constitution clearly outlines its goals: "The object of the society is to discover, procure, preserve, and diffuse whatever may relate to the natural, civil, literary, and ecclesiastical history of the State of Alabama, and of the States in connection with her." And in this it was fairly successful until all activities were suspended during the Civil War. The society continued punctuated by moments of enthusiasm and productivity into the first decade of the 20th century. This present volume is the first meeting of the society containing a report of the Executive Committee, an address by the president, Alexander Bowie, statistics of Tuskaloosa by M. Tuomey and W. Moody, as well as a "A Memoir, On the Subject of the Cotton-Plant" by Isaac Croom. Rare in commerce. Even institutional holdings are a bit thin with only 16 copies noted by OCLC.
