In later 3/4 morocco with marbled paper over boards; all plates present, but Howes calls for a map not present here. Binding is quite bright. Occasional pencil marginal bracketing. Paper in vol. 1 is heavily toned and discolored throughout else very good. Howes S-938, Howes calls this the "[m]ost elaborate-and best-argument for the constitutional validity of the doctrine of state sovereignty and the right of secession." Nevins echoes Howes, "An elaborate, legalistic argument to vindicate the South; considerably more pro-Confederate in tone than the author was as Vice-President during the war." - Nevins II, p. 91.
