WEEDEN, [Maria] Howard. Shadows on the Wall. New York: M. Stolz & Company, 1898. 1st ed. 8vo. [32] pp., illus. In orig. cloth with gilt title on the front cover. Front endpaper is starting to separate at the hinge, but the joint remains strong, otherwise near find. Contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper. A lengthy modern inscription on the dedication page marks Weedon's induction in the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1998, with signatures of several on that the Board of Directors. Weeden was a noted Alabama artist turned poet at the end of her life. Her focus in both art and poetry were the formerly enslaved. This her first work of poetry in a dialect accompanied by numerous and quite sensitive illustrations was sufficiently successful for her to produces a few other volumes of mixed poetry and illustration. After going into a second printing there was a press fire at Stolz and the plates were burned.
