Originally written by Sargent in 1842 in service of what would be Clay's third unsuccessful campaign for the presidency, this biography was periodically revised and reissued in service of his other campaigns including Clay's 1848 primary campaign against Zachary Taylor and then again as a memorial biography after Clay's death.
