Harwell calls this a "moving tribute by the premier historian of the Confederacy" -In Tall Cotton 60. And Nevins echoes this calling it "An immensely moving essay that honors Southern soldiers and leaders at the same time shows a broad understanding of the whole war" Nevins II, p.14. This copy from the library of Frank G Rankin with his bookplate and monograph blindstamp as well as a gift inscription to him by friends. Rankin was a notable Civil War enthusiast and collector.
