Confederate Soldier Being a Memorial Sketch of George & Bushrod Harris

Item #81850

EDWARDS, John E. The Confederate Soldier; Being a Memorial Sketch of George N. and Bushrod W. Harris, Privates in the Confederate Army. New York: Blelock & Co., 1868. 1st ed. 12mo. vi, 139 pp. Orig. cloth. Some conservation work relining the spine of the textblock and reinserting it into the case. Discreet work making this a more solid copy. Light rubbing to the binding. Previous owner name in ink on both front and rear endpapers and front and rear blank leaves along with early ink scrawl and pencil scrawl. One of the blank leaves at the rear of the book has been roughly excised. Otherwise, general toning to the contents. Very good. Nevins I, p.85. In Tall Cotton, 51. Harwell writes, "Robertson, in Civil War Books, describes this as 'an overly sentimental tribute,' but there is a time for sentiment and such a time came to the Reverend Edwards when he was called upon to write about twin brothers, one who died at Centreville, Virginia, June 30, 1861, and the other who died on the battlefield of Fair Oaks, June 30, 1862... The volume itself is designed by the father of the 'twin brothers' to be monumental..." Rare, we can find no auction records or sales in the trade.

Price: $3,500.00
