Smith, composer of a number of popular songs, is credited by Peters for his "valuable assistance in revising, correcting and arranging his manuscript" p. vi. Milo Milton Quaife in his 1966 edition of the book posits that, because Peters was in Paris for much of the 1850s, that Smith was the real author of much of this work (p. xii). Reese Best of the West p 139.
