American Controversy 78-71a. Meredith responds to William Barron's HISTORY OF THE COLONIZATION OF THE FREE STATES OF ANTIQUITY...published in London in 1777. Barron attempted to justify the taxation of the American colonies by drawing on the precedent of ancient Athens. The fifteen letters in Meredith's effort are dated from Apr. 30, 1778 to Oct. 14, 1778. According to Howes, only thirty copies were issued. This information is corroborated by John Almon's biographical note on Meredith in his BIOGRAPHICAL, LITERARY AND POLITICAL ANECDOTES (1797). Among the rarest of American Revolutionary tracts.
