CUMMING, A[lexander]. A Sermon Preached Feb. 25, 1761. By A. Cumming, A.M., at His Instalment in the Pastoral Charge of the South Church, in Boston; Collegue with the Reverend Joseph Sewall, D.D., to Which Is Added, the Charge, by the Rev. Dr. Sewall; and the Right Hand of Fellowship by the Rev. Mr. Pemberton. Boston, N.E.: Printed and Sold by Benjamin Mecom, 1761. 1st ed. 58pp. 1/2-title. Disbound. Faint scattered foxing, else very good. Evans 8830. ESTC W29334. Printed by Benjamin Mecom (1732-1766), son of Benjamin Franklin's favorite sister, Jane. Mecom had been apprentice to Franklin's partner James Parker in New York. His uncle set him up as a printer in Antigua, a venture in which Mecom failed. Mecom returned to America, where he unsuccessfully owned presses in Boston, New York, and New Haven. Cumming (1726-1763) was pastor at South Church for only two years, due to ill health, although the celebrations of his installment were quite extensive and so many people attended the meal following that tables had to be laid in three houses.

Price: $500.00
