With the ownership signature on front free endpaper of Elizabeth Greenleaf. On verso of titlepage of first sermon "Elizabeth Greenleaf her Book the gift of Mrs. Backstone to me Eli. Greenleaf. Inserted is a hand-written table of contents. Stephen Badger's "Two Discourses" is arguably the earliest work on temperance. Badger, a Massachusetts minister who worked with Native American converts, noted that intemperance deprived humans of the ability to exercise free will.
