This is the first book S. Weir Mitchell had a hand in writing. John K. Mitchell was the author's father, and a former student of Benjamin Rush. Not listed in BAL, but is mentioned in Merle Johnson's American First editions. It proceeds The Children's Hour, which is generally considered his first book by five years. The five essays deal with the following subjects: Origin of Malarious and Epidemic Fevers; An Essay upon Animal Magnetism; The Penetrativeness of Fluids; The Penetrativeness of Gases, & New Practice in Acute and Chronic Rheumatism.
