SUMNER, Charles. The Crime against Kansas. The Apologies for the Crime. The True Remedy. Speech of Hon. Charles Sumner. In the Senate of the United States, 19th and 20th May, 1856. Washington, DC: Buell & Blanchard, Printers, 1856. 1st ed. 32pp. doubled-columned. Disbound. A bit of faint scattered foxing, former owner's name at head of title page, else very good. Sumner denounced Southern efforts to expand slavery into Kansas Territory and rebuked Southern politicians such as Andrew Butler of South Carolina. Two days after the speech, South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks, in response to Sumner's insult to Butler, attacked Sumner with a cane leaving Sumner unconscious and bleeding.
