Spooner, a Boston lawyer, was a prominent abolitionist and convinced of slavery's unconstitutionality. Phillips was also an ardent abolitionist as well as a champion for women's suffrage and labor reform. He sought to have slavery abolished by legislative action since he considered the Constitution to support such action.
