Tears to the first three leaves along one of the horizontal folds; minor chipping to wrappers; two small holes to the final two leaves affecting three words of text, else a very good copy. [a] Written by the grandson of the Philadelphia physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence Dr. Benjamin Rush. Rush's letter supported Captain Wilkes regarding the Trent Affair, which involved the interception of a British vessel on the high seas and the capture of two Confederate emissaries on board. Rush "asserted that the South had long had too much national power, and approved the revolution then in progress" Nevins II, 113. Sabin 74243. The publisher, John Campbell, who is also notable, was an Irish-born bookseller, a Copperhead, and a period author of the controversial book, `Negro-mania'.
