Bennett p.73 (for the 1896 ed.): "The original edition...had 32 colored plates drawn on stone by the author." Charles Maynard (1845–1929) was an important New England naturalist and a founding member of the Nuttall Ornithological Club who published several key field guides and sold supplies for naturalists via his company C. J. Maynard & Co. He also discovered and named several subspecies of birds in the Caribbean.
