"The author, a member of the 27th Connecticut, took part in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville only; his extreme bitterness toward the South mars the whole narrative." Nevins I, p. 157. Dornbusch I, CT-103. Tipped onto the title page is an autograph note from G. M. Farnham, Late Capt. 10th Mich. Cav., about recovering a sword in eastern Tennessee in the spring of 1864 inscribed to Lieut. William R. Harmount from the members of Co. C, 27th Reg. Conn. Vols. Farnham tells how he returned to sword to Harmount after the war.
