Streeter Sale 990: "Brackenridge, Pennsylvania writer and jurist, wrote these selections for the Pittsburgh Gazette in the 1780's, and he states in his introduction that one of the pieces written `with a view to induce emigration to [Pittsburgh] ... will serve to give some idea of what the town was at an early period, and the state of society at that time, July 26, 1786.' The other selections provide a good idea of the state of literature on the early western frontier." "Brackenridge tells us more concerning himself in the personal references found here and there in the volume, than in any other work"-Thompson.
