With the ownership signature of Otelia Cromwell on the front free endpaper and some penciled annotations in her hand. Otelia Cromwell (1874-1972) was a distinguished scholar and professor of English Language and Literature at Miner Teachers College. She was the first African American to graduate from Smith College, receiving a BA in Classics. She later earned her MA at Columbia University in 1910 and a PhD in English at Yale in 1926, the first Black woman to earn a doctorate from there. She was the eldest child of John Wesley Cromwell.
