A presentation copy, inscribed by Isaiah Thomas to the noted historian of the American Revolution, David Ramsay: "Hon. David Ramsay, From his humble servant, The Author." David Ramsay (1749-1815) historian, physician, and politician, was one of the most important native-born historians of the American Revolution. Born in Pennsylvania and educated at the College of New Jersey, he received medical tutoring from Benjamin Rush. Ramsay then moved to South Carolina and rose to prominence in local society, representing Charleston in the state legislature during the war. He also served in the Confederation Congress and in the South Carolina Senate. Ramsay's History of the American Revolution and History of the Revolution of South Carolina were drawn from contemporary sources and his own experiences and observations. They remain important early accounts of the Revolution. "It is no exaggeration to say that Ramsay defined an American national history.
