Item #77527

(BALLOONING). Grand Balloon Ascension at Pontiac Fair! Remington, IN: [n.p.], 28 August 1879. Pictorial broadside, 16-7/8 x 6-1/2 inches. Minor foxing, two small separations at old folds, two very small burn holes at illustration, else a very good copy. Advertising the "Mammoth Balloon Ascension" by Prof. H. Plattner "with the largest Balloon ever inflated" at the Remington, Indiana, fair. The illustration shows a man hanging by his knees from a trapeze suspended from a hot air balloon among the clouds. The testimonial reads: "The Balloon Ascension that Prof. Plattner made yesterday at our fair was the best and most daring performance on the trapeze that we have ever witnessed. The ascension was prompt to time and reached the altitude of about one and a half miles, landing some seven miles from the Fair Grounds. It was the most attractive feature of the day, drawing an immense crowd. We recommend the parties to you as performing all they agree to. The Balloon is the largest travelling." Wednesday was to be a "Grand Free Day! For the Ladies."
