BAL 8970. Presentation inscription from the author on front endpaper: "To Asa Gray with the kindest regards of Oliver Wendell Holmes, December 4th 1882." Gray, professor of botany at Harvard and America's leading defender of Charles Darwin, was a close friend of Holmes, dean of the Harvard Medical School. They were both members of the Saturday Club, the Boston literary society that started the Atlantic Monthly. Even in death they are close, buried near to each other in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. Very light rubbing to spine ends, else near fine.
