William MacRae (1834-1882), commander of the 15th North Carolina, temporarily took charge of a brigade at Antietam after the death of its brigadier. The action at Ream's Station, an important railroad intersection outside Petersburg, matched five Confederate brigades against parts of Hancock's Union corps. MacRae led his brigade in a timely charge which forced retreat of the Federal forces.
