BETTS, A[lexander] D[avis]. Experiences of a Confederate Chaplain 1861-1864. Edited by W.A. Betts. [Greenville, SC: n.p., n.d.]. 1st ed. 103 pp. Portraits. Orig. printed wrappers. Faint foxing to wrappers, front wrapper separated but present, else a very good copy. Very rare. Betts was a Methodist Episcopal minister and served as a chaplain to the 30th North Carolina Infantry. "Taken as a whole, it gives a clear picture of the work of a Confederate army chaplain, his administration to the spiritual wants of the soldiers as well as assisting the wounded and running errands for soldiers. He entered the service at Smithville, now Southport, North Carolina, and soon joined the Confederate armies in Virginia. He was at Sharpsburg and Gettysburg, but had returned to North Carolina before Lee's surrender. He was paroled at the end of the war, having attached himself to General Johnston's forces." Coulter 29. Nevins I, p. 59. Thornton 859.
