NUNEZ CABECA DE VACA, Alvar. Relation of Alvar Nunez Cabeca de Vaca. Translated from the Spanish by Buckingham Smith. Albany, NY: Joel Munsell, 1871. 4to. 300pp. Portrait frontis. portrait. Orig. cloth, printed paper spine label. Rebacked, original spine and label laid down, very old waterstain to very head of upper margin of first few leaves, not affecting text, else very good. One of the 100 copies. Cabeca de Vaca's account is probably the most important of the early works on the western country. De Vaca and his surviving companions, who had withstood the ravages of disease and the cruelties of the Indians, were seized on the Mississippi coast and held in slavery for four years, but escaping, they at length made their way across the Southwest. The book contains notations of Buckingham Smith together with an appendix which gives, among other pertinent records, an account of de Vaca's life.
