As members of the Fourth Regiment South Carolina Volunteers, the Palmetto Riflemen were engaged at First Manassas, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Antietam, and joined Longstreet in the Battle of Chickamauga. The regiment rejoined the Army of Northern Virginia and fought in the Wilderness and at Spotsylvania. The Palmetto Sharp Shooters were formed in 1862 by a special order of the Confederate Congress and was composed of re-enlisted veterans from the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th South Carolina regiments. They initially were commanded by the famous Col. Michah Jenkins until his promotion to brigadier in July 1862; he was later to be killed at the Wilderness. Although the Sharp Shooters were intended for special service, this never materialized and the men were thrown into the brigade as previously.
