Contemporary gilt-bordered calf, rebacked in period-style calf, gilt-ruled raised spine bands, compartments decorated in gilt and blind, original red morocco spine label laid down, original marbled endpapers, gilt-chamfered edges. Originally published in eighty sixpenny parts, most including two engravings, the book was gathered together either by subscribers to the parts or later by the publishers to make a single volume. This is an example of the volume issue, dispensing with any list of subscribers. "An important compilation of English voyages, richly illustrated with 157 engraved maps and plates. Anderson sometimes gives the original accounts, others are edited or abridged versions, and frequently additional materials from other sources are added to five scope and depth to the narratives"-Hill. In addition to Cook's voyages, this volume also includes accounts of the voyages of Byron, Wallis, Carteret, Mulgrave, Anson and Drake.
