Light wear to spine ends and corners, very light scattered foxing and toning, else a very good or better copy. HOWES W-141. Evans 37951.A biography of Washington along with a collection of eulogies. The portrait is an engraving by William Hamlin after Edward Savage. With a contemporary ownership inscription on the reverse of the title page: "Jonathan Carpenter's Book. Randolph, Mar. 10th 1810. Price 1 Dollar-No. 40." Jonathan Carpenter (1757-1837) fought in the Revolution with five different volunteer companies. He then decided to become a privateersman, serving on the Reprisal. When the ship was captured, Carpenter spent 18 months as a British captive. He was exchanged in July 1779. He was one of the original settlers of Randolph, Vermont, serving several terms as a selectman.
