This is the second edition, larger type issue, after the first of 1880, and the first edition to include Gorham's account of Terry's attempted assassination of Field. Includes interesting descriptions of early days in California, Field's appointment as first alcalde of Marysville, recollections of Sutter, etc. Field served on the legislature in California, and was later appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by Lincoln.
