Tipped in titlepages in the Doubleday 1902 second printing of the first two, and most important, volumes of this set detailing the E.H. Harriman Expedition to Alaska. Harriman originally planned a summer pleasure cruise to Alaska with his family in 1899, but expanded it to include three artists and 25 men of science, including many members of the Washington academy of sciences. The voyage lasted two months and covered 9,000 miles. Vol. One is written by John Burroughs, John Muir, and G.B. Grinnell. The many photographs by Edward S. Curtis are stunning.
