Disliking army life, he sold his commission and "spent the winter of 1843-4 in the wilds of Ontario and northern New York with an Indian friend. He then returned to England, and, after a short expedition to the deserts of North Africa and another to South Africa, he came back to America to travel through Mexico to the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Plains"-Wagner-Camp. Ruxton was acting as both a commercial attache for the British and a commercial agent for the Mexican government.
