Presentation inscription from the subject, "To Mrs. Minnie A. Claflin, Meadowbank, N.Y. The title of this book does not suit me-but your brother wishes it sent. Sincerely yours, Oliver O. Howard. San Francisco, Cal., Mar. 12th 1887." Howard, a career soldier, rose to Major General in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. He lost his right arm at the Battle of Seven Pines. An evangelical Christian, he tried to use Christian principles to guide him in his work. In 1865, he was put in charge of the Freedman's Bureau, tasked with integrating freed slaves into society.
