Item #69831

POLLARD, Edward A. Observations in the North: Eight Months in Prison and on Parole. Richmond: E. W. Ayres, 1865. 8vo. 142 pp. In orig. wrappers. Light wear to the spine and some discrete conservation to a tear at the top of the front wrapper. Some dampstaining to the contents along the bottom 1/4 of the last half. Foxing. Very good in morocco backed clamshell. Confederate Hundred 68. Howes P-457. Nevins I, p. 200. Parrish & Willingham 4994. The numeral "6" in the page number "136" has dropped out of alignment suggesting, according to Harwell in The Confederate Hundred, that this is the unstated second printing. The "A Relic of the Rebellion" printer's note that was issued with the second printing is not present. Harwell writes, "Only three Confederate prison narratives were published during the war, by Pollard, Anthony M. Keiley, and Beckwith West. Of these Pollard's is probably the most important and Keiley's the most interesting. These two have claims for being the last two books printed in the Confederate States, and it has so far been impossible to determine priority between them"-In Tall Cotton 149. This second printing was published but wasn't yet distributed before the Union troops entered Richmond. "This little volumes seems to have been written principally to steel the hearts of the Confederates and to convince them that they could yet win if they made the best use of their materials and opportunities" Coulter 374.
