Orig. full pebbled sheep, double-ruled in blind, raised spine bands, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, A.e.g. Faint scattered foxing to exterior leaves, else a very good or better copy. Dornbusch I, MA-263. Rare, Worldcat locates five copies. Presentation inscription from the author on the front endpaper, "Mr. and Mrs. Geo. M. Barnard, Jr., with the love of Mr. & Mrs. Stevenson." George Barnard Jr., was a captain of the 18th Massachusetts Infantry who, though shot five times at the Second Bull Run, escaped serious injury. Issued without a title page. The front cover reads "Gen. Stevenson"; this title taken from Dornbusch. Written by Gen. Stevenson's father, this biography is primarily about Stevenson's role as commander of the 24th Massachusetts Infantry in North and South Carolina, 1862-63, with excerpts from his letters to his mother, and letters of condolence sent to his family. During the siege of Charleston Harbor, Stevenson commanded the 3rd Brigade in Alfred H. Terry's division. He remained in command around Charleston until January 1864, when he was placed in command of the 1st Division, IX Corps. Stevenson had previously fought alongside men from IX Corps in North Carolina. Stevenson was killed at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia, on 10 May 10 1864.
